Citizen - The Summer

Citizen's Youth record came out June 2013 and I was about 14-15 years old at the time.

I was on tumblr a lot during this time and it's how I got into other bands. The pop punk and metalcore scene was pretty huge at the time. I think I bought merch online from this band. It might have been Basement's infamous B hoodie (I still have it). And I've gotten a few complilation CD's from the shipment. I think it was either from Run For Cover records, Warped Tour, or from No Sleep. I can't recall and I don't have it anymore.

Anyway, "The Summer" by Citizen was on the CD and that's how I learned about this band. Looking back, I think Citizen is one of the bands from my adolescence I most cherished and love even today. I can't really say that about most of the bands I have listened to back then.

Listening back to their music, it's sad, angsty, and emo but not in the My Chemical Romance sense where their image have this edginess that overshadows them. Citizen is described as an "emo revival" band and it does make sense to me. They are not like the pop punk bands that were popular during this time because their sound is much more softer and sad. To me, this record makes you feel like you've been crying for hours and you're trying to hold yourself together. Their lyrics are so raw with emotion, it definitely resonated with me growing up as a teenager as well as the other kids on tumblr.
