Brand New - The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot

Deja Entendu were one of the most important records for me when I was a teenager.

I was a big fan of Brand New when I was 16-17 years old. I've talked about how pop punk and similar bands were popular on tumblr during this time. There really was this emo revival going on and Brand New were huge at the time depsite Deja Entendu being released in 2003. The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me and Daisy were also popular records but Deja Entendu was the most coveted physical media to own. I remember that having a vinyl record of this song was so rare in those days.

This record has a lot of emotional songs on it and it's funny to me how when we were literal children crying to these songs as if we experienced real heartbreak. I'm listening to this song now 10 years later and these songs are hitting me more than they ever did.

Call me a safe bet, I'm betting I'm not
I'm glad that you can forgive
Only hoping as time goes, you can forget

So you can forget, you can forget
You are calm and reposed, let your beauty unfold
Pale white, like the skin stretched over your bones
Spring keeps you ever close, you are second-hand smoke
You are so fragile and thin, standing trial for your sins
Holding onto yourself the best you can
You are the smell before rain, you are the blood in my vein

Call me a safe bet, I'm betting I'm not
I'm glad that you can forgive
Only hoping as time goes, you can forget
